Math Academy: UC Davis CSTEM
We are excited to have completed our first year using CSTEM. As a Math Academy, we believe that every student needs access to high-quality math instruction as well as coding and programming skills that are part of an ever-changing marketplace. C-STEM works to empower educators to confidently integrate technology into their classroom while maintaining focus on the objectives and standards that they currently teach. Through CSTEM, teachers use technology to extend learning as well as provide alternative experiences for students who do not flourish in a regular textbook classroom. Technology is used as a tool to help students expand their critical thinking skills and their ability to apply STEM concepts to real-world situations. Our students have learned how to navigate the CSTEM platform through weekly lessons and opportunities to engage in robotics. Take a peek of what CSTEM looks like in an elementary setting:
WO AVID program is a 8 + year foundational program that offers a variety of tools for students and educators to use in the classroom. By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID Elementary creates a ripple effect in later grades. Our students learn about organization, study skills, communication, responsibility, and self-advocacy by creating structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers. We have established a high connection between a college-career going culture to ensure the opportunity gap before it begins.
We routinely use WICOR strategies in the classroom to increase the level of student engagement, content understanding, and college readiness for all students. WICOR is a collection of teaching and learning strategies to guide students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels. WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.
Positive Behavior Intervention Support PBIS
WO uses the PBIS framework to address the behavioral needs of all children through positive interactions. We believe that by establishing and maintaining a preventive and positive classroom and school environment our students can flourish academically and socially. Our goal is to establish a strong student-teacher-school connection that is grounded in ensuring every student gets what they need to succeed. Throughout PBIS framework we have established school-wide expectations, incentives, and celebrations that motivate our students to W.O.R.K.
