Heat Advisory Guidance for Outdoor Activity
Excessive Heat Hits Orange County and Surrounding Areas
Orange, Calif. – Sept. 4, 2024 – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Orange County and surrounding areas through the end of this week. As the safety and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority, outdoor activities at our school sites will be modified in accordance with Orange County Health Care Agency guidance. This may include but is not limited to:
- Moving PE and/or recess indoors
- Encouraging students to take frequent rest and refreshment breaks in shaded areas
- Modifying athletics in accordance with the County’s “Hot Weather Guidelines for Athletic Practice.” Sport-specific information will be shared by your student’s coach, if applicable.
Please remind your student to drink water throughout the day and to wear appropriate, light, loose-fitting clothing and hats outside. All OUSD schools have air-conditioning to ensure a comfortable learning environment.
Additional precautions to take during times of excessive heat include:
- Avoiding unnecessary sun exposure, applying sunscreen, and wearing a hat outdoors, preferably with a wide brim
- Staying cool indoors, whether it’s at home or a public facility with air-conditioning, such as a shopping mall, movie theater, or library
- Refraining from leaving children, elderly people, or pets unattended in closed cars or other vehicles
- Checking on those who are at a higher risk of heat-related illness, including seniors who live alone, people with heart or lung disease, and young children to make sure they are staying cool
Additional information is available on our website at www.orangeusd.org/resources/hot-weather
