Mission Statement

The Orange Unified School District’s Home School staff recognizes that each student is unique and special.  Our goal is to help students develop the skills be become lifelong learners as well as helping them to become respectful, responsible individuals.  Learning at the Home School is a combined effort involving students, family, community, and school.  Together, we strive to provide students with an alternative learning environment that is safe and supportive, and fosters each student’s academic success.

 

Vision Statement

OUSD Independent Study provides an alternative educational setting to meet the educational needs of students and parents that choose a more personal home education setting, while providing curriculum that aligns with State standards.

 

Program Information

Independent Study is a high school program serving students grades 9-12. It has the benefits of a home school and a virtual curriculum blended with face to face instruction with highly qualified Orange Unified School District teachers. Students with special education needs may also participate in this program.

Students work independently, according to a written agreement and under the supervision of a credentialed teacher and a parent. We follow District adopted curriculum and meet District graduation requirements. Students and parents are central to the program and are actively involved.

  • Independent Study students receive access to the UC/CSU approved coursework.

  • Individualized instruction with a credentialed teacher

  • Independent Study students can participate in CIF sanctioned sports at their school of residence. As long as a they are dual enrolled.

  • Independent Study students can dual-enroll at their school of residence. Students may take up to two classes at their school of residence.

  • Independent Study students can participate in co-curricular activities at their school of residence.

  • Attendance is determined by the amount of work that is returned to the teacher on the date that is written when signing the Master Agreement.  The work must be turned in on that date to collect attendance. No late work will be accepted for attendance purposes.

  • Minimum 5 hours of assignments per class per week.

  • Attendance is based upon on-time completion of work.

  • Each student has a required amount of to meet with their Independent Studies teacher based upon grade level, if students are enrolled in a lab they are required an additional 2 hours per week.

    • Seniors - 2 hours per week

    • Juniors - 3 hours per week

    • Sophomores - 3 hours per week

    • Freshmen - 4 hours per week

 

  • Hours:

    • Monday - Thursday: 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

    • Friday- NO STUDENTS

 

  • Prospective students:

    • must be on track to graduate and current on credits

    • must have good attendance at their home school

    • any student who receives Special Education service must be admitted through the IEP process

 

  • Split schedules

    • Minimum of 4 classes must be taken with Independent Study and the rest can be taken with school of residence

    • Due to the blocked schedule, Canyon and El Modena High School students will take 4 with Independent Study and 2 at the school.
