Welcome Message
Dear Orange Unified Community,
It is with great enthusiasm and gratitude that I introduce myself as the new Superintendent of Schools for Orange Unified School District.
I am honored to have been selected by the Board of Education to lead this remarkable district. As a proud Southern California native and a lifelong educator, I am excited to return home and serve a community dedicated to educational excellence and equity.
Over the past 30 years, I have dedicated my career to enhancing success for all children, fostering inclusive school communities, and supporting the dedicated professionals who make public education possible. Most recently, I served as Superintendent of Worcester Public Schools in Massachusetts, where our collective efforts led to notable gains in academic achievement, family engagement, and organizational efficiencies and innovation. Prior to that, I advanced to the position of Deputy Superintendent in San Bernardino and held various roles throughout California, including classroom teacher, principal, and instructional leader.
As I step into this new role, I come with a clear commitment: to listen, learn, and lead with purpose. My Entry Plan is designed to guide this transition with care and intention. Rooted in the district’s EDGE values—Excellence in Academics and Leadership, Dedicated and Engaged Communication, Genuine Wellness and Safety, and Efficient Utilization of Fiscal Capital—my plan highlights key goals for the coming months.
- Student Success: Focus on preparing all students for their future paths and closing achievement gaps.
- Board Collaboration: Establish a solid foundation for shared governance and transparent decision-making.
- Operational Efficiency: Ensure systems and supports align to meet school site and student needs.
- Positive Culture: Champion a respectful, empowering environment for all.
- Community Trust: Engage frequently and openly to build stronger relationships across the district.
In the coming months, I look forward to visiting our campuses, meeting our talented educators and staff, connecting with families, and hearing directly from scholars. Through school visits, listening sessions, and community events, I will gain insight into the people, programs, and partnerships that make Orange Unified a special place.
Collaboratively, I am confident that we will build on OUSD’s strengths and work together to create a future where every child is inspired, supported, and empowered to learn and lead at their optimal levels.
Thank you for the warm welcome and the opportunity to serve this wonderful community. I can’t wait to get started.
With great hope and respect,
Rachel H. Monárrez, PhD
