Happy Spelling Bee season. El Rancho Charter School student Sydney Tran is representing Orange County and the Orange Unified School District on one of the biggest academic stages in the country — the 100th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, currently underway in Washington, D.C.
Nine years ago, fourth-grade teacher Kristin Cowan helped launch the FNL Kids Chapter at Panorama Elementary in the Orange Unified School District. Since then, she has built a supportive campus environment where 35 student leaders gather weekly to brainstorm, plan and carry out activities meant to spread healthy habits and positive behaviors across campus.
Due to her commitment to student growth, FNL Kids members have stepped into leadership roles for the first time and discovered new ways to showcase their talents.
The Woman’s Club of Orange recently announced OUSD's own Maribel De Rosas (EDGE Virtual Academy), Lesley Mendez (El Modena High School), and Victoria Esperanza Mena Perez (Villa Park High School) as the recipients of its 2025 Inspirational Young Woman Award.
Shaylee Geary, Roxy Milligan, and Sabrina Singh from Canyon High School won third place in the Mental Health category at the regional Directing Change Film Contest Awards for their film "Taking the Wheel".
