Hour of Code /Computer Science
Computer Science and Computational Thinking is an important skill for student success n future college and career opportunities. The information below provides resources for the computer science resources and hour code that are being used within the district.
Computer Science Education Week is an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science as it becomes increasingly important to society and future careers. During Computer Science week, OrangeUSD annually supports our students through the Hour of Code. Journey with us below for some fun and engaging activities to implement in your classroom.
Computer Science
When you teach code, you’re not only teaching the language of technology. You’re teaching new ways to think and bring ideas to life. And Apple has programs to help you teach coding, whether you’re just starting or ready to get your students certified in Swift. |
Your students can use Scratch to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games. In the process, they learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for everyone in today’s society. Educators are integrating Scratch across many different subject areas and age groups. |
It is even more important to provide meaningful learning experiences that help build resilience. For 40 years, LEGO® Education solutions have been purposefully designed to increase student engagement and confidence for all learners. Teachers will find guidance for teaching online, tips for continuing collaboration, and inspiration for teaching in a hands-on way whether in person, online, or a mix of both. Parents can also leverage at-home learning resources and lessons to continue STEAM learning from anywhere. |
C-STEM develops computing technology, curriculum, and pedagogical strategies, and provides professional development and support for STEM teachers, even those without any prior coding and robotics experience, to integrate hands-on computing and robotics into their classroom teaching. The rigorous C-STEM Math-ICT Curriculum provides K-12 students with up to 13 years of integrated learning of math and computer science. |
California teachers designed UCCI's innovative courses, which integrate A-G academic work with Career Technical Education (CTE), to help students prepare for college while they explore potential career paths. UCCI courses meet A-G course requirements for freshman admission to UC and CSU campuses, making them valuable components of schools' CTE and/or Linked Learning pathways. |
Esports is undeniably popular as a digital platform for interaction and entertainment. In an effort to capitalize on interest-based learning, we wanted to capture students where they are with esports. We sought explicit connections with esports and content standards (Next Generation Science Standards, English—Language Arts, International Society for Technology in Education, and Social Emotional Learning) and wrote a series of integrated courses for grades 9-12 that would replace traditional high school English. This matters because it could literally change the game in how we integrate STEM education with workforce sectors and industries in order to attract more students. Courses -University of California approved for “b” designation |
