Orange Unified School District Celebrates
New Science Center at Canyon High School
ORANGE, CA – February 11, 2022 – Orange Unified School District (OUSD) celebrated the new Measure S Phase I science center at Canyon High School with VIP tours and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The brand new, state-of-the-art facility is currently open for student use and features 12 science labs, 12 standard classrooms, and office spaces for student services and administration.
The facility at Canyon High School is the third project funded by the $288 million Measure S school bond that voters residing within OUSD’s boundaries approved in November 2016. The District broke ground at Canyon High School in June of 2019 and celebrated the building’s “topping out” in November of 2020.
“What a humbling moment it is to stand here with you to celebrate this milestone in our community,” stated Superintendent of Schools Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D. “This beautiful facility at Canyon High School is over 61 thousand square feet and stands as a tangible reminder of our mission to, in partnership with our community, provide a safe, equitable, and innovative culture of learning for each scholar to have a competitive EDGE as a leader.”
Canyon High School’s campus improvements are being completed in two phases. The first phase focused on constructing the two-story science center, creating a new food service area, adding parking, creating a new drop-off area, and renovating the multi-purpose room. The second phase of the project will focus on the modernization of the existing science building, including but not limited to interior remodeling and utility upgrades, as well as the removal of 21 portable buildings from the campus.
Canyon High School opened its doors in 1974 and is nestled on a forty-acre campus in the beautiful Anaheim Hills community. The school offers excellent academic programs, award-winning artistic programs, and outstanding interscholastic athletic programs.
“The District is proud of the STEM Complex at Canyon High School,” stated Assistant Superintendent, Business Services, David Rivera. “This building is more than brick, mortar, and steel structure, but a reflection of many years of hard work, dedication, planning, and commitment by our community to make this dream come true for our well-deserving students.”
Measure S is a $288 million General Obligation (GO) bond funding facility modernization and construction projects at OUSD’s four comprehensive high schools (Canyon, El Modena, Orange, and Villa Park). Each high school has a $72 million share of voter-approved funds.
With the bond’s passage, voters agreed to a $29 tax per $100,000 of assessed property value. However, prudent financial planning and increased overall property values are currently saving taxpayers 43% from the original estimate. Residents in OUSD’s boundaries are being taxed only $16.56 per $100,000 of the assessed property value on their 2021-2022 property taxes. According to District records, this equals over $23 million in total taxpayer savings since 2017-18.
