Orange, CA – May 13, 2021 – Orange Unified is proud to announce that Teresa Andrade STEM Resource Specialist at McPherson Magnet was announced as the California League of Schools (CLS) Elementary Educator of the Year after going through a rigorous selection process. https://www.leagueofschools.org/2021eoy

The CLS Educator of the Year award is given annually to California elementary, middle, and high school educators who exemplify educational excellence. Up to 10 finalists from each region were honored locally. 

Each week Teresa educates K-5^th grade students in the Project Lead the Way curriculum for one hour at McPherson Magnet. Additionally, she teaches three sections of middle school engineering utilizing two modules from Project Lead the Way: Design and Modeling and Automation and Robotics. Examples of project-based learning that she has her students complete include:

• 2nd grade students build knowledge and skills that will enable them to program a game on a tablet using Scratch Jr. Mrs. Andrade teaches students that computing is a collaborative activity that fosters creativity, communication, and teamwork. Students have to be able to break a problem down into smaller problems in order to construct a sequence of steps to solve a problem.
• 4th grade students investigate how we take in information through the senses and where the information is processed in the brain. Her students also explore how the brain and body react to stimuli. For the final project in this module, Mrs. Andrade has students work as a team to design, plan, and create a video to raise awareness about concussions.
• 6th graders designed prototypes of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) for a patient with cerebral palsy. Students had limited supplies and a short amount of time to collaborate and apply the design process.

In addition to teaching, Teresa also started the first Femineer club within the Orange Unified School District. Teresa encouraged 6^th through 8^th grade girls to join the club to inspire them to pursue STEM majors and careers. She meets with the group every Monday after school, and they complete creative robotics projects using Scratch and wearable technology projects after learning basic circuitry and C programming. The girls will bring their completed projects at the end of the year to a Femineer Summit at Cal Poly Pomona.

El premio al Educador del Año de CLS se otorga anualmente a los educadores de escuelas primarias, intermedias y secundarias de California que ejemplifican la excelencia educativa. Hasta 10 finalistas de cada región fueron honrados localmente.

Cada semana, Teresa educa a los estudiantes de kínder a quinto grado en el plan de estudios Project Lead the Way durante una hora en McPherson Magnet. Además, enseña tres secciones de ingeniería en la escuela secundaria utilizando dos módulos del Proyecto Lead the Way: Diseño y Modelado y Automatización y Robótica. Algunos ejemplos de aprendizaje basado en proyectos que hace que sus alumnos completen incluyen:

Sus alumnos también exploran cómo reaccionan el cerebro y el cuerpo a los estímulos. Para el proyecto final de este módulo, la Sra. Andrade hace que los estudiantes trabajen en equipo para diseñar, planificar y crear un video para crear conciencia sobre las conmociones cerebrales.

• Estudiantes de sexto grado diseñaron prototipos de ortesis de tobillo y pie (AFO) para un paciente con parálisis cerebral. Los estudiantes tenían suministros limitados y poco tiempo para colaborar y aplicar el proceso de diseño.

Además de enseñar, Teresa también inició el primer club Femineer dentro del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Orange. Teresa animó a las niñas de sexto a octavo grado a unirse al club para inspirarlas a seguir carreras y carreras STEM. Se reúne con el grupo todos los lunes después de la escuela y completan proyectos de robótica creativa utilizando Scratch y proyectos de tecnología portátil después de aprender los circuitos básicos y la programación C. Las niñas traerán sus proyectos terminados al final del año a una Cumbre Femineer en Cal Poly Pomona.
