Transitional Kindergarten is Growing in Orange Unified School District

Orange, CA – September 4, 2019 – Orange Unified School District is proud to provide high-quality early education programs to our diverse community of learners.  In our second year of offering full-day Expanded  Transitional Kindergarten (ETK) in Orange Unified, we are overwhelmed at the interest pouring out from our community to enroll children turning five by March.

Our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program is for students who turn five years old between September 2 and December 2. Expanded TK is part of our already successful TK program and includes children turning five years old between December 3 and March 31. Our ETK/TK program provides a successful bridge between preschool and traditional kindergarten and is taught by fully credentialed teachers with early childhood expertise.

"OUSD Executive Cabinet is so excited to be able to offer five new classrooms to meet Strategic Initiative 1.4 of our Strategic Plan which focuses on providing targeted early intervention resources and supports to ensure all students develop foundational literacy and math skills," said Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, Cathleen Corella.

These five new classrooms will join the other seventeen established classes that are currently full to the brim. The new early learning classrooms will open at  Esplanade Elementary, Handy Elementary, and La Veta Elementary, with second classrooms being added at both Cambridge Elementary and Canyon Rim Elementary. The growth from thirteen classrooms in 2017-2018 to a total of twenty-two for the 2019-2020 school year is remarkable.

“We are excited to be expanding our TK program across all our communities,” stated Executive Director, Accountability, Equity and School Support, Elena Rodriguez. "The extreme amount of interest is a testament to the high quality program we offer at every TK site.  Our teachers in every classroom provide a developmentally appropriate and engaging classroom climate that prepares our young scholars for Kindergarten."

Questions about our Expanded  Transitional Kindergarten program can be answered by our Elementary Education office at (714) 628-4463.

For children who are too young to attend our TK/ETK program, we offer high-quality preschool programs as well. Please contact our Early Learning Center at (714) 628-5577 for more information.
