Cathleen Corella Announced as Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services

Orange, CA – May 15, 2019 – Orange Unified School District is pleased to announce the promotion of Cathleen Corella from Executive Director, K-12 Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support to Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services. She was appointed by the Board of Education at their regular meeting on May 9 and will begin her new role on June 4.

Hired as the Administrator of K-12 English Learner Services & Professional Development in July 2012, Corella’s extensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction helped to shape a vision of 21st Century Teaching and Learning for the Educational Services Division. Corella demonstrates a passion and commitment to ensure that all students receive an equitable and quality education regardless of their background, disability, or current educational circumstance. As the Director of Curriculum & Instruction, she has continued to advocate for all students and has influenced the trajectory of many students in Orange Unified School District. This is evidenced by the restoration of Elementary VAPA, facilitation of STEM Labs across the district, expansion of innovative Career Technical Education Pathways/Academies such as Aviation and Construction Trades, GATE Universal Screening,  and the creation of OUSD’s first Early Middle College Academy.

“Cathleen Corella is a dedicated instructional leader who works effectively to promote equity for all learners across Orange USD. She has a proven track record of excellence in implementation of major curriculum initiatives including AVID in each elementary and secondary school districtwide,” stated Superintendent of Schools Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D. “Cathleen will be an innovative and strategic leader and welcome member of executive cabinet.” 

Prior to her service in Orange Unified, Corella was Regional Director for Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Division of Student Programs. She has followed a career path of progressive responsibility and started as a teacher before becoming an assistant principal, principal, and then regional director. In her ten years as High School Principal, she was instrumental in the design and implementation of nationally acclaimed alternative school programs that provided wrap around academic, social, and emotional resources and services that were aligned with each individual student and their extended family. As Regional Director she continued to be an innovative change agent as she revamped the curriculum design and professional development plan of all instructional programs within the district. Corella also assumed responsibility of overseeing all Categorical Programs, English Learner Services, Assessment Services, as well as supervising and coaching site principals.

“I am truly humbled and honored for the opportunity to continue serving our OUSD students, parents, and community in the innovative design of relevant learning experiences and programs that enable our students in finding their purpose, voice, and the ability to self-regulate their learning in school and future career endeavors,” said Corella. “I am looking forward to collaborating with parents, community members, OUEA, site leaders, and my district office colleagues on proactive ways to achieve the initiatives of our upcoming Strategic Plan as I truly believe that together we will unveil OUSD as the flagship district in Orange County.”

Corella will replace Reginald “Reggie” Thompkins, who has accepted the position of Associate Superintendent for the Division of Student Programs and Services at the Riverside County Office of Education.
