Exploratory Home Economics

This is an introductory trimester course open to seventh graders. It is designed to build confidence in caring for young children, improving personal appearance, caring for one's own room, and becoming acquainted with the kitchen and its tools. Simple food preparation skills are taught including nutritious menu planning and table setting and manners. The sewing unit acquaints the student with use of the sewing machine, simple sewing techniques, and clothing care.

Home Economics 8

This one year course presents a general survey of home economics. Personal and family living are studied through developing skills and understanding in caring for children. A unit on first aid is included. A sense of self-worth is promoted by means of a unit on personal development. Foods and nutrition are explored through preparation of simple, nutritious meals including quick breads, cereal products, protein cookery (eggs, milk, cheese dishes) and simple desserts. Art and management principles as they apply to the home are studied. Sewing projects introduce the student to textiles and clothing construction techniques.
