World History & Geography: Medieval & Modern Times

Year course required of grade 7.
This course examines social, cultural, and technological changes during the period AD 500–1789. A review unit begins with a study of the ways archaeologists and historians uncover the past. The sequence of these units is both historical - advancing across the years AD 500–1789 - and geographic, advancing across the major continents of the earth. The units focus on the great civilizations that were developing concurrently at that time. By developing world maps and timelines, students can locate these cultures in time and place, compare events that were developing concurrently in the world of this important era, and observe the transmission of ideas and beliefs, along with scientific developments. The skills, content, and vocabulary of this course will prepare students for the Stanford 9 social studies section.

California State Standards - 7th Grade

United States History

Year course required of Grade 8.
Students study the ideas, issues and events from the framing of the Constitution up to World War I, with an emphasis on America's role in the war. After reviewing the development of America's democratic institutions founded in the Judeo-Christian heritage and English parliamentary traditions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture and economy and relate them to the emergence of of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course and consequences of the Civil War. They make connections between the rise of industrialization and contemporary social and economic conditions. Students should also master the social studies skills, including research skills and vocabulary necessary to successfully accomplish the goals of the course.

Specially Designed Academic Instruction In English (SDAIE) Social Studies - Level II 7th grade

Year course open to Grade 7.
Prerequisites: Students may participate in SDAIE - Level II if the following criteria is evident:

  1. Must be identified as limited English proficient
  2. Achieve level C or above in the IDEA (IPT II) Oral Language Proficiency Test
  3. Teacher recommendation
  4. Counselor recommendation

Note: The above are recommendations. Some criteria or all criteria may be used for placement.

This SDAIE social studies program is designed for seventh grade Level II (intermediate and advanced) limited English proficient students. It is the study of world history and geography and covers the period of AD 500–1789. This course of study has been developed in compliance with the California state Framework curriculum standards and is to be used concurrently with the District's mainstream 7th grade Social Studies course of study. The aim of this course is to acquaint the student with an overview of the great civilizations that were developing concurrently during this time period.

Specially Designed Academic Instruction In English (SDAIE) Social Studies - Level II 8th grade

Year course open to Grade 8.
Prerequisites: Students may participate in SDAIE - Level II if the following criteria is evident:

  1. Must be identified as limited English proficient
  2. Achieve level C or above in the IDEA (IPT II) Oral Language Proficiency Test
  3. Teacher recommendation
  4. Counselor recommendation

This SDAIE social studies program is designed for the eighth grade Level II (intermediate and advanced) middle school limited English speaking student. It is an overview of United States cultural, historical, and political heritage. This course continuum is broken down into eight (8) comprehensive units. Each unit is accompanied by an explicit outline. This course of study has been developed in compliance with the California State Framework Curriculum Standards and is to be used concurrently with the District's mainstream 8th grade Social Studies course of study. The aim of the course is to expose the student to, and familiarize the student with the history and culture of the United States.
