LIBRARY
THE 21st CENTURY LIBRARY PROJECT -- NEW!!
As you may have heard Canyon High School is embarking on a
5-year plan to upgrade our library. If you have visited the
library this year, you know that the furniture is the
original 1974 vintage, the carpet is miserable, and the
atmosphere is dreary. Our library has none of the features
of a teen hangout – and the ambience is not even close to
Starbucks.
A 21st Century Library Committee has been formed
by parents, and they have developed plans to make this
feature of our school the attractive hub of activity that it
should be. Steps already taken include: weeding over 2500
outdated books, developing conceptual drawings with the help
of a design consultant, ordering new carpet, scheduling
repainting of the interior, and ordering new furniture. Our
librarian, Mr. Graupensperger, is using his skills with
tools to rebuild some of the computer desks for the new room
design, and we hope to have this all completed before the
Taking Care of Business in August.
It is our hope that all members of the Canyon High School
community will find some way to assist us in this project –
as the library is central to the learning support at our
school. Our goal is to provide our students with an
attractive, pleasant, well stocked and current set of study
tools – and we hope you can join us in this venture. We are
looking for donations of books, gift certificates for
Borders and Barnes and Noble, gently used books,
subscriptions to magazines, and we are also taking cash
donations. An account has been set up with our ASB
Bookkeeper in the Student Center – and these donations are
tax deductible. To obtain a list of requested books, please
stop by the library or email
Mr. Graupensperger.
We are trying to enlarge our collection by 20,000 books, and
this is definitely a long term plan. If you think of the
average cost of a hardback book today – you can see that we
will need a great deal of support to reach this goal. We
thank you for anything you can do help us. We will have a
booth at the Taking Care of Business days to accept books
and any other donations you may bring.

ELECTRONIC DATABASES
Canyon High
School has access to two electronic databases
(SIRS
and EBSCO).
You can get to these from home by going to the District's
home page and then to Resource Tools (you will find some
very useful items on this page, in addition to the
databases). These databases allow you to search more
effectively for the information you need. Each of these
databases has compiled up-to-date information from journals,
newspapers, books, and radio/TV broadcasts. They are
available to you as full text reprints that you can print
immediately or email to yourself. To log into the
databases, you need to put the password in the blank field
next to the database’s name. See Mr. Graupensperger for the
password if you don't know it. |
